The mild climate of Abaco makes it superb for outdoor activities of all
kinds. The moderating effect of the surrounding water and constant breezes keep
the temperature almost constant year-round. Winters are warmer and summers are
cooler than in nearby Florida. Enjoy your favorite sports all year long!
Unspoiled and uncrowded, even by Abaco standards, Great Guana Cay is the place
to get away from it all. This long, skinny island --- only 200 feet wide in
places --- has fewer than 150 year round residents. A bluff runs down the center of
the island like a backbone, and views from the top are stunning. You can watch the sun
rise over the Atlantic to the east, then watch it sink into the Sea of Abaco to the
west.
The beach here, arguably the best in the Bahamas, is seven miles of soft, coral sand. The Great Abaco Barrier Reef is less the 50 feet offshore --- with smaller coral gardens even closer --- so snorkelers and divers can walk into the clear water and be in the center of the action in just a few fin kicks. The reef crest's branching elkhorn corals are so large that you can see them from the bluff. Massive boulders of brain and star coral litter the bottom on the shoreside slope, and huge limestone rocks break the surface un the shallows, creating calm eddies filled with schools of minnows ansd baby tropicals.
Water Sports
Swimming, snorkeling and diving are popular sports in Abaco.
Live coral and beautiful tropical fish are abundant.
On the Atlantic side, a barrier reef protects miles of sandy beaches.
Dive Guana is a full-service dive shop offering half-day and full-day diving and
snorkeling trips.
Boating and Fishing
Rent a boat and do some island-hopping! Fascinating villages reminiscent of
18th century New England can be found on Elbow Cay, Green Turtle Cay and
Man-O-War Cay. Nearby Treasure Cay has a golf course and tennis courts.
If you like to fish, you'll find bonefish are plentiful on the flats, tuna,
wahoo, dolphin, sails and
marlin a short distance out, and there's terrific reef fishing. Try your hand
at lobster in season, too!
Dining
Guana Cay has several fine restaurants. There is also a well-stocked
grocery store if you prefer home cooking!
